Two teenagers have died of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at a holiday home in Northern Ireland.
Police and Heath and Safety experts are now examining why Aaron Davidson and Neill McFerran, both 18, died at in a rented seaside apartment block in Castlerock.
Another male was taken from the scene to Causeway Hospital in Coleraine, where he is said to be in a stable condition and set to make a full recovery.
The alarm was raised by one of the schoolboys who managed to phone a relative who alerted police, fire and ambulance crews to the scene.
John McPoland of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said: “This is an absolute tragedy for the families involved.
Despite resuscitation attempts, crews were unable to revive the two young men.
All three teens are believed to be from Netwonabbey, County Antrim and celebrating the end of their A-Level exams.
Describing it as a ‘tragic story’, East Londonderry MLA Adrian McQuillan told the Coleraine Times: “These young men went to Castlerock to relax for a few days waiting on exam results coming and their lives were taken away from them.”
And in a joint statement, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Newtownabbey expressed their shock and sadness.
A post mortem examination of both teenagers’ bodies is expected to take place shortly and an inquest will be opened and adjourned in due course.
• Members of the National Landlords Association (NLA) can join mydeposits for only £10 during its summer sale.
mydeposits claims it is the only scheme specifically designed so that landlords can continue to hold on to their tenants’ deposits for the duration of the tenancy.
Richard Price, Director of Operations for the NLA, said: “This new flat fee for NLA members joining mydeposits is great news and comes just at the right time in the year when many new tenancies are being created. We expect this to be very popular indeed.”
